Something more "workwearish" based around the melton wool waistcoat. We are having fairly hot weather for the season, and I could skip a jacket. This is a more contemporary look with modern jeans. I should try a pattern with a wider leg some day...

Yes, would be good indeed. But they should be shorter in the length I think...

Yes, shorter. Maybe different fabric too but same principle with the bound edges.
Personally I think even though the melton waistcoats were good, the pattern should not be re-used. The length wasn't the only issue, it was also the width of the trim and everything that derived from it (pockets, button placement).
Regarding fabric, a knit waistcoat or a lighter weight workwear-fabric thing should be used instead. Something like the salt n pepper chambray, only with some odd waistcoat kind of features and fabrics.

The waistcoat really was too heavy ... originally Simon was going to line in which would have made it almost unwearable.
I really like the design and it needs to be a knit for me!

I never wear mine. It hangs down to my crotch and the armholes are way too small. If the pattern was revised I would love them. A Brown's Beach type fabric would be cool, too.

I am actually thinking of getting mine chopped to shorten it. I adore the two-tone design, the colors and the fabric, but it's just too long to wear. I think I'd rather have a visible horizontal seam and a shorter length – it's workwear, after all. I'd probably need to get rid of the top pockets.

Ethan Wong altered his waistcoat and it does look great on him: https://www.instagram.com/p/Buer5L0hcYq/

Do you know how he altered it? It seems to fit him better, but still has the same number of buttons and pocket stance.
Looks like the bottom front was shortened, but not by much, by re-sewing the trim and without moving pockets. Very nicely executed alteration.
If the armholes were bigger it would have been possible to shorten it from the shoulder seam, but I don't think this was an option, not on this pattern.

Wong's waistcoat is the same as mine, so I think the guess Nik makes is right. You don't have much margin at the skirt, and much less at the shoulder. It is indeed too long as per vintage specifications - it is because of this that I can wear it with those modern jeans, which, although not really low-waist, would not be feasible with a vintage patern lenght.
