Yep. That's very nice Tom. The winter one is a must, flannelized, grey and burgundy and cozy.

I like the use of brogues with workwear. It reflects the vintage aesthetic where 'smart' shoes aren't anything 'fancy' No need to go workwear top to bottom.
I really dislike the modern notion that you save your brogues for interviews and weddings.

Is that really a thing? Brogues aren't specially fancy for a wedding or an interview. Actually they're the worst choice ![]() (12-12-2019, 07:44 PM)Guillermo Wrote:(12-12-2019, 02:59 PM)metatron Wrote: I like the use of brogues with workwear. I doubt that modern guides would suggest brogues for such purposes as weddings or even interviews. No matter what the lacing is, blucher/derby or not, brogues are casual.

No, probably not modern guides, but everyday reality based on my observations doesn't always correspond to those.

But for many people it is simply a case of trainers=casual and brogues=formal or at least smart casual for going out at night. Remember the bar for formality is lowered so if it isn't a corporate gig many won't even wear a suit to interviews, just maybe shirt tucked in and shoes that aren't trainers.

Changing trains in chilly Brussels Midi today (or rather yesterday, technically). Wearing two thirds (waistcoat and trousers) of last winter's SJC King Cole suit under a reproduction US army mackinaw. ---- It was only when I looked at this picture that it dawned on me I had forgotten to put my braces back on after the Eurostar security check.... That's why the trousers are hanging so low.... *ahemmm*

I think I understand Metatron's insight above. It is common to see what really are very sport shoes, even with suits - probably best associated with people that wear suits as an uniform, not because of preference, and can get away with such choices. So yes, not a few would consider any laced (or not) shoe that is not a trainer, "formal" enough. A concept similar to how just tucking your shirt (or even the simple fact of wearing a shirt) is enough to dress smart for many people, as opposed to their usual attire of t-shirts and the like.

That is what I am getting at-and of course it depends where you are based, so if you work at an office in Canary Wharf this does not really apply. But the average person will not wear brogues day to day, even if they are casual they will reserve them for a 'fancy' night out. Which is just a shame cause they are great for adding a bit of elegance to a daily, 'not doing anything special', outfit.

Showing off my new "Christmas Special" polo shirt!
![]() Pairing it with dark denims very aptly highlights its color, which is a great shade of red. "Runaway" collar to better display those nice spear points... ![]() ![]() • bluescaptain, bontempi, Edward2.0, Hieronymous, Hilton, Hung by the tie, Jörg, metatron, Pat Spade, RockinByrdie, Royohboy, Sean Longden, TheContinentalOp, uberwaller

![]() ![]() About ten days ago, back in the mists of time (back to work a week now, and it feels as if I was never away). Went to see the mini-exhibition at the Museum of London for the 40th Anniversary of the release of the London Calling album. Wearing privately imported Cowboy Cut Wranglers (13MWZ, pattern unchanged since launch in 1947), an Original Montgomery brand civilian duffel coat (I hear they're planning to do a full-on repop of the military original in due course, heavy boiled wool and all), and an SJC l/s polo. Beret is a true Basque, from France's last remaining original beret company, LaulHere (bought in their factory shop in Oleron Sainte Marie in July 2017).

Great mixing in of sjc there, old punks don't die, they just get into vintage clothing! Although unfourtunately I was too young to enjoy the Clash till the mid 90s, I got quite emotional when I went to the exhibition. |
